SUPER SUNDAY

On the last day of this year’s Holland Regatta excellent weather
conditions brought a lot of excitement during the medal races that were
sailed in front of the harbour. First gold medal today was for Aussie
Tom Slingsby in Laser class. Tom has been sailing a super series
including 4 times first place.
Not only Tom but also surfer Nick Dempsey from GBR took the gold medal
after a series of 5 ones and first place in the medal races.
49-er fly so fast that sometimes they are hard to control and flip over.

Dutch world champions Marcelien de Koning and Lobke Berkhout were
unbeatable as they took the Gold medal home again. Congratulations
girls!

LEARNING FOR LONDON 2012
The Holland Regatta is setting an example for 2012 Olympics. This week,
Rob Andrews, competition manager from the RYA, visited the Regatta site
to learn more about the organisation of such an international sailing
event. As competition manager of the RYA he is involved in a campaign
for Olympic races to be sailed at the Weymouth and Portland
Sailing Academy. They aim to be one of the venues to host the 2012
Olympic Sailing competition. Andrews: “We are looking to stage a number
of big world events each year. The Holland Regatta is a much respected
sailing event. We learn a lot which will help us in our preparations for
our Sail for Gold Regatta in 2012.”

DID YOU KNOW…
…240?? people made this year’s edition of the Holland Regatta
possible on the water and on shore.
…1924?? lunch packages were distributed this week
… that on Saturday a number of Dutch sailors had a black ribbon in
their sails respecting the funeral of Hans Horrevoets that day.
…that on Wednesday the number of laptops in use by sailors was
limited to the number of wall plugs ?
